This Might Be Taking Outsourcing Too Far

CNN News Centre errmmmm Atlanta? CNN News Centre errmmmm Atlanta?

The Metagrobolize subject matter can be a little yawn inducing to the reader who stumbles across our humble little space on the great World Wide Web, so for accidental surfer collisions I’ve attempted to make my postings a little more colourful as well as enlightening.

Colourful usually means …outsourcing gone wrong….or how not to outsource….and I think this one falls into the latter category, and yes…it is real!

A recent job posting reads: “We seek a newspaper journalist based in India to report on the city government and political scene of Pasadena, California, USA.”

A reporter half a world away covering local street-light contracts and sewer repairs? A reporter who has never gotten closer to Pasadena than the television coverage of the Rose Bowl parade? Read the rest of this entry »

TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE

Every now and again, major companies through statements and actions show their true colours.

Kevin Myer of the ‘lean’ manufacturing blog: Evolving Excellence, identified a couple of articles on page 14 of May 14th’s issue of Rubber News (I’m not going to question his reading habits and I’m sure his wife understands. Apologies Kevin if you’re not married, and perhaps if you’re not, your reading habits may have something to do with that)

The first being General Motors (GM) looking for potential suppliers, and the second on how Honda and Toyota prefer to work ‘with’ their suppliers.

The GM story begins with,

“General Motors’ global expansion will require better suppliers”, according to Bo Andersson, the auto maker’s purchasing chief. The Indian, Chinese, Russian and other markets opening up to GM, he said, will pay off for suppliers who achieve better collaboration with the auto maker. Read the rest of this entry »

David (S) V Goliath

As I how now become a part of the vibrant blogoshpere landscape in Malaysia, it is appropriate that I at least give some comment to the Malaysian government’s attitude to towards this powerful vehicle of freedom of expression and freedom of speech, something that does not always sit comfortably with Asian politics and culture.

Malaysia can boast many powerful arguments for the consideration of foreign investment (FDI) and the stability of its elected government ranks very highly amongst them, just take a look at Malaysia’s neighbours such as Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia and its not difficult to understand what makes Malaysia and Singapore the most risk adverse options.

The former and incumbent administrations recognise this and Malaysia has enjoyed a period of political stability for the past 30 years. Read the rest of this entry »

Lost in translation part 2

I make no apologies at all for stretching a theme, particularly as I’ve recently watched a version of Helen Mirren’s stellar movie success ‘The Queen’ where the hilarity of the subtitle mistakes warranted the film a second viewing and deserved their own Oscar. If anyone wants a copy please comment!

Companies that look to outsourcing purely on a cost reduction basis….be warned..there is more to outsourcing than meets the uninitiated eye.

London: They are some of the highest grossing movies ever made, but it seems that in a bid to cut costs, moviemakers outsourcing their films to inexperienced and unqualified translators in countries like Malaysia, Taiwan and India are ruining the movie experience for audiences, thanks to all those horrific subtitles. Malaysia Productivity jumps 3.7%

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian economy last year recorded the highest productivity growth in the last six years at 3.7%, ahead of even developed countries such as Singapore (1.2%), Sweden (2.8%), Japan (2.5%), Germany (2.0%), and the United States (1.5%).

According to the Productivity Report 2006, which was launched yesterday, the productivity growth also contributed to strong gross domestic product (GDP), which grew 5.9% last year, driven mainly by strong public and private sector expenditure, and an impressive trade performance, which hit the RM1tril mark.

The report stated that Malaysia’s productivity level increased to RM27,221 per employee, from RM26,255 per employee in 2005. Read the rest of this entry »

With the latest Garner research predicting a 50% increase in offshore spending in 2006/2007, with the UK being the biggest contributors, perhaps it’s a good thing that their research also shows a large increase in the use of Oversea’s service providers. Gartner research predicts an increase from the current 13% to a significant 20% of all offshore transactions being handled by experienced offshore service providers, which in light of what’s happening with some of the UK National Health Service BPO contracts, it cant happen too soon.

Janspeed Example

I’m writing this, the first real blog on the Metagrobolize blogsite, on a flight back from a business trip to see some of Catenate’s UK customers.

It was from one such visit to a high performance automotive engineering and component manufacturer that it really struck a chord on how outsourcing can be highly complimentary to SME companies operating in ‘niche’ market sectors if outsourcing is embraced and ‘bought into’ by the management team.
