Tit For Tat

Dried Apples preserved with a cancer causing chemical, frozen catfish laden with banned antibiotics, scallops and sardines coated with putrefying bacteria and mushrooms laced with illegal pesticide were among the food imports detained at US ports in April, along with more than 1,000 shipments of tainted dietary supplements, toxic cosmetics and dangerous counterfeit medicine. The USFDA has also stopped all imports of a toothpaste to test for a potentially deadly chemical reportedly found in tubes sold in Australia, the Dominican Republic and Panama and the most high profile case earlier this year, a massive pet food recall was conducted in the USA since pets were sickened or killed by pet food contaminated with tainted wheat gluten.
Is this the work of Al Qaeda? Is this a new twist in the war against terrorism?
Nope, it’s the risks you take trading with the unregulated Chinese market place, as evidenced by the many lawsuits that U.S pet food companies now face from angry consumers who says their pets were poisoned by tainted ingredients from China.
What are the Chinese doing about it? apologising to the owners who buried their dogs? Ermmm nope, they are retaliating of course, with the recent rejection of certain health supplements and raisins imported from the United States failing to meet Chinese safety standards and have either been returned or destroyed.
Inspectors in the ports of Ningbo and Shenzhen found bacteria and sulphur dioxide in products shipped by three American companies, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.
“The products failed to meet the sanitary standards of China,” the agency said in a brief notice posted on its Web site. No details were given on when or how the inspections were conducted.
Am I being cynical smiling while I read that statement or wondering if this is another tit for tat game of Chinese brinksmanship?
